As the pandemic is starting to peak globally and we find a new sense of normalcy with masks and gloves, an alarming report has confirmed that using Hydroxychloroquine has actually resulted in a spike in the number of deaths being reported in the US.

How much Effective Hydroxychloroquine is?

A study stated that the use of the antimalaria drug has not proven beneficial in the treatment of viruses and has caused numerous deaths and ailments in infected patients.

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine didn’t benefit patients with the coronavirus, either alone or in combination with an antibiotic, according to the study published Friday by The Lancet medical journal.

While looking for other alternatives, researchers say a drug that was used to treat lupus could be used in treating patients suffering from coronavirus.

The previous study showed the reports of 15,000 patients where they had been treated with any combination of the four drugs were associated with a higher risk of death than seen in 81,000 patients who didn’t receive them.

What does Research say?

Cancer patients with COVID-19 who were treated with a drug combination promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump to counter the coronavirus were three times more likely to die within 30 days than those who got either drug alone, U.S. researchers reported.

“Treatment with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin were strongly associated with increased risk of death,”

Dr. Howard Burris, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), said in a briefing with reporters on the results.

In contrast, President Trump has called the drug a gamechanger in the history of medicine and has often promoted the use of the drug. Dr. Richard Schilsky’s treatment should only be used in the context of a clinical trial, per FDA guidance.

Only two of the patients in the study were taking the drug as part of a clinical trial.

As we conduct more trials to find a suitable drug to treat the deadly COVID19, it is essential to know that the drug is definitely not a one-size-fits-all.
